Sewing Machines

Methods & machines

Cathryn uses a number of rare machines combined with hand embellishment to create her designs.

She uses the threads like paint and the needle as a brush.

The Irish

Taking over from some hand embroidery for the British Couture market in the early 1900’s, the Irish creates a free motion straight stitch and a satin stitch who’s width is controlled by a knee bar. Cathryn predominantly uses this wonderful vintage machine.

The Cornely

Used in France from the late 1800’s, it has a hook needle which produces a chain stitch like that of the previous hand tambour process. This machine was also used to produce embroidery for the couture market.

Hand Embroidery

Often used in conjunction with either one of Cathryn’s machines, it can enliven a design.
Techniques include goldwork, knots, princess pleating, crewel, silk shading, cutwork and beading.
